Music drives brain plasticity
نویسنده
چکیده
Music is becoming more and more of an issue in the cognitive neurosciences. A major finding in this research area is that musical practice is associated with structural and functional plasticity of the brain. In this brief review, I will give an overview of the most recent findings of this research area.

Music Training Program: A Method Based on Language Development and Principles of Neuroscience to Optimize Speech and Language Skills in Hearing-Impaired Children
Introduction: In recent years, music has been employed in many intervention and rehabilitation program to enhance cognitive abilities in patients. Numerous researches show that music therapy can help improving language skills in patients including hearing impaired. In this study, a new method of music training is introduced based on principles of neuroscience and capabilities of Persian languag...
متن کاملWhy would Musical Training Benefit the Neural Encoding of Speech? The OPERA Hypothesis
Mounting evidence suggests that musical training benefits the neural encoding of speech. This paper offers a hypothesis specifying why such benefits occur. The "OPERA" hypothesis proposes that such benefits are driven by adaptive plasticity in speech-processing networks, and that this plasticity occurs when five conditions are met. These are: (1) Overlap: there is anatomical overlap in the brai...
متن کاملDegree of musical expertise modulates higher order brain functioning.
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we show for the first time that levels of musical expertise stepwise modulate higher order brain functioning. This suggests that degree of training intensity drives such cerebral plasticity. Participants (non-musicians, amateurs, and expert musicians) listened to a comprehensive set of specifically composed string quartets with hierarchically manipul...
متن کاملLanguage, Music, and Brain
Introduction: Over the last centuries, scientists have been trying to figure out how the brain is learning the language. By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...
متن کاملMusic and Neural Plasticity
This chapter reviews material on the effects of music training on the brain. The review is framed within the broader theoretical context of neuroplasticity and experience, as well as the relationship between behaviour and brain structure and function. It presents a comprehensive account of studies that have investigated differences in the brains and behaviour of musicians compared with non-musi...
